Donny the Pirate
All of the villainy, none of the charm
Movie pirates tend to be charming rogues. Think Errol Flynn as Captain Blood. Burt Lancaster in The Crimson Pirate, and, of course, Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. There’s nothing redeeming about today’s pirates. They are simply villains with none of the charm.
The sad fact is that the President of the United States is a pirate. Lawless. Uncouth. Unfettered by laws or principles. Yet I don’t think Trump would mind being labeled a pirate. He’d probably take it as a compliment. Or at least as a way to own the libs. Donny the Pirate offers one way this may play out. And Trump being Trump, he’d replace the skull with his own mug because tacky is a concept he simply doesn’t understand.
A few “Making Of” nuggets for those who enjoy them: This strip’s original title was Donny Roger, but that signaled the punchline, and that’s never a good idea. The strip also gave me the opportunity to create a Jolly Roger flag with Trump’s face on it. That was different—and fun. Finally, Donny the Pirate marks the first Sketchier with a visual punchline; no text needed. That was fun, too. At least for me.
