Too Late?
The debate is no longer if America could become an authoritarian state, it’s whether it already is or not. In just 10 months, Trump and his enablers have:
Indicted his political appointments
Sent federal police to snatch people off the street based on the arrested’s ethnicity
Traded political favors for personal business gain
Deployed military troops to American cities
Extorted businesses, universities, and the media into compliance with his political dictates
Sought to systematically disengranchise minority voters
And this is a very partial list. Meanwhile, the Constitutionally constructed checks-and-balances are out of whack thanks to spinelss, sycophantic Republicans in Congress and a precedent-shredding majority on the Supreme Court. And billionaires are lining-up to be part of the new American oligarchy because why should the Trump family have all the fun?
Preparation notes that while humor is sometimes the only way to preserve one’s sanity in this onslaught of mayhem, sometimes jokes feel out-of-place; unworthy of the moment. Then again, I firmly belive if we can make fun of tyrants, there’s still hope. Even if the weapon of choice is a Dad joke.
